After the holidays, it is very common to feel a little off.

You may notice bloating, low energy, sugar cravings, or that your digestion just doesn’t feel as good as it normally does. When we have been eating more sugar, richer foods, and perhaps drinking more than usual, the body can feel a little out of balance.

The good news is that your body is incredibly wise and always working to restore balance. With the right support, it can begin to heal and reset very quickly.

This is not about doing anything extreme or restrictive. It is about coming back to simple, nourishing foods and daily habits that support your body in a gentle way.

Here are a few simple ways to support your gut and start feeling like yourself again.

Start with Meat Stock. Deeply Nourishing and Easy to Digest

One of the most powerful ways to support gut healing is by including meat stock.

Unlike long cooked bone broth, meat stock is cooked for a shorter time, making it much gentler and easier to digest, especially if your gut is feeling sensitive or inflamed.

It is rich in amino acids, collagen, and minerals that help to soothe and support the gut lining. This is especially important if you are experiencing bloating, food sensitivities, or signs of a “leaky gut”.

A simple cup of warm meat stock can be incredibly healing.

You can sip it on its own or use it as the base for soups and meals. It is also a wonderful way to support hydration and provide your body with easily absorbable nutrients.

Sometimes the most healing foods are also the simplest.

Choose Simple, Cooked Foods

When your digestion feels off, the goal is not to overload the system, but to support it.

Cooked foods are much easier for the body to break down than raw foods. Think slow cooked meats, soft vegetables, and simple meals that are easy to digest.

Blended soups are especially helpful. Because they are cooked and pureed, they are very gentle on the digestive system and require less work from the body.

This gives your gut a chance to rest and repair.

Keep meals simple and nourishing rather than complicated. Your body will thank you for it.

Focus on Nourishment, Not Fibre

There is a lot of focus on fibre when it comes to gut health, but when the gut lining is irritated or inflamed, large amounts of fibre can actually make symptoms worse.

If your gut is sensitive, too much fibre can feel like rubbing sandpaper on an already irritated surface.

Instead of focusing on fibre, focus on nourishment.

Prioritise good quality proteins, healthy fats, and well-cooked vegetables. As the gut begins to heal, it will naturally become better able to tolerate a wider variety of foods.

Healing comes first. Diversity can come later.

Introduce Fermented Foods Slowly

Fermented foods can be very beneficial for the gut, but they are not always well tolerated in the beginning, especially if there is imbalance or sensitivity.

Start slowly.

A small amount of sauerkraut juice or a teaspoon of fermented vegetables alongside a meal can be enough to begin with. Over time, as the gut becomes stronger, you can increase this gradually.

Listen to your body. More is not always better.

Reduce Sugar and Processed Foods

Sugar and highly processed foods can feed the less beneficial bacteria in the gut and contribute to inflammation.

After a period of indulgence, gently reducing sugar and processed foods can make a big difference to how you feel.

This does not need to be extreme.

Simply come back to real, whole foods. Meals made from scratch. Foods that nourish rather than deplete.

When your body is properly nourished, cravings naturally begin to settle.

Support Your Body Beyond Food

Gut health is not just about what you eat.

Stress, sleep, and daily lifestyle all play a huge role in how your digestive system functions.

When we are stressed, the body shifts out of a state where it can properly digest and absorb nutrients.

Simple daily habits can make a big difference:

  • Getting outside for fresh air
    • Gentle movement like walking
    • Prioritising rest and sleep
    • Taking time to slow down during meals

These are often the missing pieces when it comes to healing.

Keep It Simple

You do not need to do everything at once.

In fact, healing happens best when we keep things simple and consistent.

Start with one or two small changes:

– Add in a daily cup of meat stock
– Focus on simple, cooked meals
– Reduce sugar and processed foods

Over time, these small shifts add up.

A Gentle Reminder

Your body is not broken. It is simply asking for the right support.

When you begin to nourish your body with real food and supportive daily habits, it has an incredible ability to restore balance.

It is never about being perfect. It is about coming back to what your body truly needs.

Small, simple steps can lead to powerful change.
